Early view of Macy’s and Herald Square in New York

On a crisp October day in 1857 R.H. Macy opened his store in New York City. He racked up sales that day of $11.06, and two years later his sales totaled $85,000 for the year. Santa made his first in-store appearance at Macy’s in 1870. In 1902, a new Flagship Store was opened at the current location at Herald Square.
